Sydney Taronga Zoo, 1997
Australia
Photograph and notes by Harriette L. Phelps

[Editor's note: Harriette Phelps of Greenbelt was on a one-year sabbatical in Sydney, Australia, and sent these photographs for the enjoyment of her friends and neighbors.]

[The picture with the koala] was taken at a photo-op provided by the Sydney Taronga Zoo, which is a nice moderately-sized zoo park across the harbor from downtown and concentrating on Australian fauna, including a "bushwalk" with kangaroos and free-flight aviary with some of Australia's 700 bird species (the US only has around 450).

The Big Barramundi in Daintree, 1997
Australia
Photograph and notes by Harriette L. Phelps

[This picture] was taken in Queensland, the area North of New South Wales (where Sydney is located), which has the Great Barrier Reef and renowned rainforest. I took a week to fly up and visit there (Cairns) because it is the Australian tropics and soon will be too hot and have very nasty stinging jellyfish. One gets up the coast from Cairns to Cape Tribulation (all these names are by Captain Cook, who came up with zingers like Morning Reef and Evening Reef and Cape Hopeless) by laid-back bus transport. I particularly wanted to take the bird trip on the Daintree River which is world-famous for birds in the spring (which is now). We heard 68 and saw 47 species in two hours, many new to me. Daintree itself is a tiny one-street town overlooking the river and the bus had to make a detour to drop me off there for a day ... fishing the Big Barramundi is also what is done there mostly. Full of nice people, like practically all of Australia is! Had fresh barramundi for dinner. I also got in two reef dives and stayed at PK Village, sort of a grown-up scout camp with a bar for hikers and campers at the end of the paved road on Cape Trib. Visited an aboriginal village (modern) and sampled some of the 30 or so exotic fruits raised in that lush climate.
