Buddy Attick Park

St. Hugh Council Knights of Columbus had a Family Picnic at Buddy Attick Park on Sunday, June 30th, after the Family Mass. Members of the council and their families played wiffleball, horseshoes, and other picnic favorites on what was a perfect day for a picnic.

Burgers, hot dogs, sausages, veggie burgers, salads, chips and sodas were enjoyed by all who attended. Past Grand Knight Joe Griffith was the team captain for the championship horseshoes match that day. More than 30 enjoyed the shady picnic area with a gorgeous view of the lake.

Youth Fishing Tournament, April 2003
Greenbelt Lake
Photographs and notes © 2003 by Austin Conaty

Saturday, April 19th, 2003 was a cool and breezy morning down at Greenbelt Lake as many of the Egg Hunters discovered. The St. Hugh Council of the Knights of Columbus sponsored a Youth Fishing Tournament from 9:00 AM until noon on Saturday. Nearly 20 young anglers braved the weather to cast for the winning fish in one of the tournament categories. Yes, Greenbelt has quite a few future fishing enthusiasts. Veteran fishing enthusiast Chuck Hatcher was passing along tips including how to tie the hooks on the line, how to bait the hook, how to cast, and what to do when the fish goes for the bait.

The Saint Hugh Council of the Knights of Columbus hosted a Family Fishing Tournament on Saturday, September 29, 2001. Participants in the tournament were Mark and Robert Bailey, Harrison and Wesley Hilliard, Billy Scott, and Emilia Pedersoli. Chuck Hatcher instructed the children on how to bait the hooks and catch the fish. John Low, Joe Ritondo, and Austin Conaty assisted Mr. Hatcher. Larry Hilliard, Scott Legendre, Sean Bailey sponsored and supervised the young fisher folks.

Harrison Hilliard won first place for most fish caught and first place for longest fish (6.375") while Mark and Robert Bailey were awarded second place for their work.

Participants were given citations during an award ceremony by Chuck Hatcher and District Deputy Knight John Winfrey.

Heron, Summer 1996
Greenbelt Lake
Photographs and notes © 1998 by Jim Bates

The two pictures were taken within minutes of each other. I got the close up shot of the bird in the water (several actually). He was remarkably tolerating of my presence. I wanted to get a shot of him in flight so I held the camera at the ready and walked towards him very slowly until he took off. I have no special skills as a photographer. My family gave me this marvelous Nikon camera for Christmas, 1995. All the settings were automatic. I think it was 400 Kodak film. The location was the south side of Greenbelt Lake, just beyond the picnic area, but not quite to the end of the peninsula. The season was late spring or early summer, 1996.

Tree, October 1995
Greenbelt Lake
Photograph and notes © 1998 by Jim Bates

This was taken in the fall of 1995 - probably October. Afternoon. It is a picture of the tree on the peninsula at the east end of the lake - taken from the south shore. The tree no longer looks like this. The right hand trunk has fallen into the lake. This was NOT beaver damage. The trunk had been eaten away at the base by some kind of bugs. The remaining parts of the tree will eventually suffer the same fate. What a shame!

This is one of my favorite lake pictures, taken from the south side of the lake looking north near the peninsula at the east end of the lake.
