GIVES Services Expand

Greenbelt Intergenerational Volunteer Exchange Service (GIVES) is continuing to expand, not only in membership, but in volunteer services provided, including minor home repairs, yard work, and transportation for medical or shopping reasons.

The goal of GIVES is to assist the frail and disabled, regardless of age, as well as the elderly, to remain independent until they are no longer able to function safely alone. In order to give or receive aid, membership is required. There is no fee, but donations are always welcome.

Many willing volunteers will be needed soon to assist with the participation of GIVES in Greenbelt's observation of Peace Month, beginning September 11. In addition, Y-Me of the National Capitol Area is sponsoring a Bike4BreastCancer Greenbelt Pink Ribbon Ride on Saturday, September 21. The mayor of Greenbelt, Judith Davis, is the honorary chair of the event. She also serves as vice-chair of GIVES.

Members of GIVES who wish to volunteer for Peace Month or the Y-Me events should call the GIVES office at 301-507-6580. For information about becoming a member, either to give or receive assistance, call the above number. Volunteers are available to take calls every weekday morning between 10:00am and noon; a message may be left also.
