System transition tasks are nearing completion --
- DIAL-UP SERVICE - has been established with IKANO, the largest wholesale dial-up provider in North America. Dial-up accounts for all active subscribers have been created at IKANO. In most cases, existing dial-up account usernames and passwords remain the same; only the modem access phone numbers will change.
- E-MAIL SERVICE - has been established with Greenbelt's CENTERway Business Directory. Mailboxes for all active subscribers have been created on the CENTERway server. In all cases, existing e-mail addresses as well as e-mail account usernames and passwords remain the same. Two new webmail systems will be available to replace BooNet's Endymion system.
- WEB HOSTING SERVICE - has also been established with CENTERway. GREENBELT.COM, GIAC, and websites for all active subscribers have been copied to the CENTERway server. In all cases, existing website addresses (URLs) remain the same. In most cases, existing FTP account usernames and passwords remain the same.
- SERVICE OVERLAP - Delmarva dial-up/realm services and BooNet e-mail/website/domain services will continue through the month of May. Mechanisms have been provided to access subscriber mailboxes and websites at both locations, if needed, during the overlapping service period. NOTE -- No e-mail will be copied from BooNet to CENTERway -- Any messages left on the BooNet mail server after the end of May will be lost -- Download or forward somewhere else what you want to keep.
- DOMAIN TRANSFER - Instructions for transferring domain GREENBELT.COM to CENTERway will be submitted to the domain registrar on Thursday, May 20. A domain transfer generally takes 12-24 hours to process and propagate to all name servers across the Internet.
The remaining transition tasks fall to each subscriber. To avoid interruption of service, you have only until May 31 to complete your reconfiguration. If you think you may need assistance, don't wait until the last day to start. We recommend that you print this document, as well as the linked documents applicable to your configuration, NOW, while you're still connected.
DIALERS
- DO NOT delete or change your existing dialer until you are certain you no longer need access to BooNet's e-mail, webmail, or FTP resources. If you want your new dialer to have the same name as the old dialer, rename the old dialer before you start. In some dialers (e.g., Windows 2000), when the username and password are not being changed, it is possible to simply add the new phone numbers to a list of alternates and move the numbers you want to use to the top of the list; however, in that case, you must give special attention to the issue of DNS server addresses (see next item).
- Windows users generally use the default (and recommended) TCP/IP option to "Obtain DNS server address automatically" upon connection to the ISP. However, if your existing dialer contains specific DNS server addresses, you will not be able to share that dialer between the two providers. In that case, either switch to the automatic option in your existing dialer or create a new dialer for IKANO. The procedures detailed in the next item below will help you make that determination.
- Create a new dialer to access your GREENBELT.COM service at IKANO. For details, click the link below that applies to your operating system --
- Software configuration --
- Connect username -- <yourname>@greenbelt.com (one changed - see your Yellow Sheet or the Migration Log)
- Connect password -- (none changed)
- Keep in mind the great thing about large dial-up networks -- if a particular access number doesn't work for some reason, you don't care - simply dial a different number. Currently, nineteen IKANO numbers are local to Greenbelt.
E-MAIL CLIENTS (mail software such as Outlook, Outlook Express or Eudora)
- For dial-up users, this part is easy. If you're dialed into Delmarva, you'll get your old e-mail. If you're dialed into IKANO, you'll get your new e-mail.
- For broadband users, e-mail clients will only access the mail server where the domain currently resides.
- Mailspace limitations will be discussed by the GIAC Board in conjunction with rates.
- Software configuration --
- POP3 mailserver name -- mail.greenbelt.com (unchanged)
- SMTP mailserver name -- mail.greenbelt.com (unchanged)
- E-mail address -- <yourname>@greenbelt.com (none changed)
- Mailbox username -- <yourname>@greenbelt.com (new syntax)
- Mailbox password -- (none changed)
WEBMAIL
- We have tried to configure domain alias 'webmail.greenbelt.com' to continue to point to Endymion on BooNet's mail server after the domain transfer. If that doesn't work, you'll have to dial into Delmarva to get to Endymion and your old mail.
- After the domain transfer, two webmail systems will be available on the CENTERway mail server, SQWebMail (with folders) and IMP Horde (without folders). Pick the system that suits your needs --
or, if you prefer --
- Mailspace limitations will be discussed by the GIAC Board in conjunction with rates.
