WINDOWS 95/98/ME DIALER SETUP Adapted from the Web (comments are welcome) CREATE AND CONFIGURE A WINDOWS 95/98/ME DIALER ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer. 2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking. 3. If the Make New Connection window doesn't appear, double-click Make New Connection. 4. In the "Type a name ..." field, enter "GREENBELT", then click Next. 5. For 10-digit local dialing, blank "Area Code". 6. Enter a 10-digit modem access number, e.g., "240-790-9517", then click Next. 7. Click Finish to create the dialer. 8. From the Dial-Up Networking window, right-click "GREENBELT". 9. Click Properties. 10. Uncheck "Include area code in dialing properties". 11. Click the Server Types tab (Windows 95/98) or the Networking tab (Windows ME). 12. Ensure that "Type of dial-up server ..." is set to "PPP: Windows ...". 13. Verify the following option settings: a. Uncheck "Log on to network". b. Check "Enable software compression". c. Uncheck "Require encrypted password". 14. Verify the following protocol settings: a. Uncheck "NetBEUI". b. Uncheck "IPX/SPX Compatible". c. Check "TCP/IP". 15. Click OKs to exit. CONNECT TO GREENBELT.COM ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer. 2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking. 3. Double-click "GREENBELT". 4. Enter your connect-username and password (case-sensitive). 5. Check "Save Password" (optional). 6. Click Connect. 7. When everything works, create a "GREENBELT" shortcut on your desktop. CHECK WINDOWS 95/98/ME NETWORK SETTINGS (IF TROUBLE CONNECTING) ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer. 2. Double-click Control Panel. 3. Double-click Network. 4. From the Network window, click the Configuration tab. 5. Highlight TCP/IP, then click Properties. 6. Depending on the Windows version, proceed to Step 7 or Step 8. 7. From the TCP/IP Settings window, verify the following settings: a. Select "Server assigned IP address". b. Select "Server assigned name server addresses". c. Check "Use IP header compression". d. Check "Use default gateway on remote network". e. Click OK, then proceed to Step 9. 8. From the TCP/IP Properties window, verify the following settings: a. Click the IP Address tab, then select "Obtain an IP address automatically". b. Click the WINS Configuration tab, then select "Disable WINS Resolution". c. Click the Gateway tab, then ensure that no gateways are installed. d. Click the DNS Configuration tab, then select "Disable DNS". e. Click OK. 9. From the Network window, ensure that "Primary Network Logon" is set to "Windows Logon". 10. Click OK to exit. CHANGE WINDOWS 95/98/ME DNS SETTINGS (OPTIONAL / NOT RECOMMENDED) ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, double-click My Computer. 2. Double-click Dial-Up Networking. 3. Right-click "GREENBELT". 4. Click Properties. 5. Click the Server Types tab (Windows 95/98) or the Networking tab (Windows ME). 6. Click TCP/IP Settings. 7. Depending on the Windows version, proceed to Step 8 or Step 9. 8. From the TCP/IP Settings window: a. Select "Specify name server addresses". b. Proceed to Step 10. 9. From the TCP/IP Properties window: a. Click the DSN Configuration tab, then select "Enable DNS". b. In "Host", enter "GIAC". c. In "Domain", enter "greenbelt.com". 10. Enter the following: a. Preferred DNS Server: 216.126.204.101 (IKANO) b. Alternate DNS Server: 216.126.204.102 (IKANO) 11.
