WINDOWS XP DIALER SETUP Adapted from the Web (comments are welcome) CREATE A WINDOWS XP DIALER ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, click Start / Control Panel. 2. Double-click Network Connections. 3. Click "Create a new connection". When the wizard starts, click Next. 4. Select "Connect to the Internet", then click Next. 5. Select "Set up my connection manually", then click Next. 6. Select "Connect using a dial-up modem", then click Next. 7. In "ISP Name", enter "GREENBELT", then click Next. 8. In "Phone number", enter a 10-digit modem access number, e.g., "240-790-9517", then click Next. 9. Enter your connect-username and password (case-sensitive). 10. Verify the following option settings: a. Check "Use this account name and password when anyone connects ..." b. Check "Make this the default Internet connection ..." c. Uncheck "Turn on Internet Connection Firewall ..." 11. Click Next to exit. CONNECT TO GREENBELT.COM ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, click Start / Control Panel. 2. Double-click Network Connections. 3. Double-click "GREENBELT". 4. If prompted, enter your connect-username and password (case-sensitive). 5. Check "Save this username and password ..." (optional). 6. Click Dial. 7. When everything works, create a "GREENBELT" shortcut on your desktop. CHECK WINDOWS XP NETWORK SETTINGS (IF TROUBLE CONNECTING) ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, click Start / Control Panel. 2. Double-click Network Connections. 3. Right-click "GREENBELT", then click Properties. 4. Click the General tab. a. Ensure that the modem is listed in "Connect to". b. Ensure that the 10-digit modem access number is displayed correctly. c. Check "Show icon in notification area ...". 5. Click the Options tab. a. Check "Display progress while connecting". b. Check "Prompt for name and password ...". c. In "Redial attempts", enter a number between 3 and 10. d. Set "Time between redial attempts" to 1 minute. e. Set "Idle time before hanging up" to NEVER. f. Check "Redial if line is dropped". 6. Click the Security tab. a. Check "Typical". 7. Click the Networking tab. a. Ensure that "Type of dial-up server ..." is set to "PPP: Windows ...". b. Check "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". c. Check "QoS Packet Scheduler". d. Check "Client for Microsoft Networks". e. Uncheck "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks". 8. Click the Networking tab again, then double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". a. Select "Obtain an IP address automatically". b. Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically". c. Click OK. 9. Click the Advanced tab. a. Ensure that the firewall is NOT ON (Windows XP SP1) or is ON (Windows XP SP2). 10. Click OKs to exit. CHANGE WINDOWS XP DNS SETTINGS (OPTIONAL / NOT RECOMMENDED) ===================================================================================== 1. From your desktop, click Start / Control Panel. 2. Double-click Network Connections. 3. Right-click "GREENBELT", then click Properties. 4. Click the Neworking tab, then double-click "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)". 5. Select "Use the following DNS server addresses", then enter the following: a. Preferred DNS Server: 216.126.204.101 (IKANO) b. Alternate DNS Server: 216.126.204.102 (IKANO) 6.
