Greenbelt Labor Day Festival 2005

Friday, September 2 through Monday, September 5, 2005,
Greenbelt Maryland.

Preliminary Schedule of Events (subject to change).

All events will take place in the Roosevelt Center parking lots unless otherwise noted. No advance registration is required unless stated. NO ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES WILL BE SOLD AT THE FESTIVAL. CITY ORDINANCES PROHIBITS THE CONSUMPTION OF ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES IN CITY PARKS, BUILDINGS, AND IN THE FESTIVAL AREA.

IN CASE OF RAIN, STAGE EVENTS & BOOTH ACTIVITIES WILL BE MOVED TO THE COMMUNITY CENTER AND THE YOUTH CENTER. CARNIVAL RIDES MAY CLOSE WITHOUT REFUNDS. Avoid parking problems, Ride the FREE Festival Shuttle. Vans will pick-up at parking locations at Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Greenbelt Elementary School, and Green Ridge House & deliver the riders to the Municipal Building/City Office. Community Center. (Entries accepted only). Pre-registration not required. Click here for details. Sponsored by: Greenbelt Association for Visual Arts (GAVA). Viewing will be Saturday and Sunday 1pm to 6pm and Monday noon to 3pm. Pickup Monday at 3pm.

Midway. Rides by Rosedale Amusements. Games, food, sale & information booths organized by Greenbelt organizations. Booths constructed and wired by Greenbelt Public Works Department. Ride tickets - $1.00; 10 for $8.00; $15.00 unlimited rides from 11:00am to 4:00 pm on Saturday & noon to 4:00 pm on Sunday. (Look for $3.00 off coupons for unlimited ride fares, and discount voucher for Labor Day Festival Ride Wristbands available in August at the Greenbelt Coop - Pay $7.00 for a voucher - turn it in at the ticket booth for a $15.00 wristband). Each wristband is only good for a single afternoon. No charge for entertainment, shows, or events unless noted. (Prices subject to change without notice.)

7:00-7:45pm OPENING CEREMONIES

Stage. Introduction of dignitaries. National Anthem sung by TBD. PRESENTATION OF OUTSTANDING CITIZEN AWARD. The major civic event in Greenbelt each year, honoring all the outstanding citizens who make Greenbelt great. Sponsored by Greenbelt Rotary. Master of Ceremonies: TBD. Sign language interpreter on stage.

7-8pm ROVING CLOWN (tentative)

Midway. Notlim the Clown will greet children.

7:45pm RECEPTION FOR THE 2005 OUTSTANDING CITIZEN

Council Meeting Room, Municipal Building. Public is invited.

7:45-9PM MISS GREENBELT PAGEANT - OPENING NIGHT

9pm-Midnight DIAMOND ALLEY

Stage. Great tunes – from Motown to Disco to Oldies, and music of today. Get your dancing shoes on!

11am CHILDREN’S WALKING SCAVENGER HUNT (tentative)

Community Center Front Lawn. Concludes at the Youth Center. Scavenger list leads participants to various locations in and around the Festival Area.  Ice cream for all at event completion. Sponsored by: Greenbelt Recreation Department

11:00am-5pm INFORMATION DAY AND COMMUNITY EXHIBIT

Roosevelt Center. Visit the information and display tables set up by local organizations. Come learn about your community!

Braden Field #2. Registration 9 am – 12 noon. 8 pitches or 6 swings. You provide your own pitcher, balls provided. Entry fee $5.00. Winner receives 40%; 2nd Place 10%; David Craig Memorial Fund 50%.

Stage. Come start off the day with the wonderful sounds of this delightful duo - with music that ranges from Patsy Cline to Elvis to Celine Dion!

1-5pm STRATEGY GAMES (tentative)

Festival Area & Youth Center Game Room. Demonstration and instruction on playing strategy games by Beltsville Strategy Games Club. Over a dozen games will be on hand. Sponsored by: Greenbelt Recreation Department

 1-6pm ART SHOW

Community Center. See displays of art by Greenbelt artists of all ages.

1-6pm PHOTO SHOW

Community Center. Come see a display of the best photographs taken by your fellow citizens. Vote for your favorites!

2pm WATERMELON EATING CONTEST (tentative)

Roosevelt Center. Sponsored by: New Deal Café.

4-5 pm JOE PIPIK AND THE BACKPACK PUPPETS

Stage. A high-energy, humorous, interactive puppet show.

4-5 pm LULA THE CLOWN

Stage. Lula charms the audience with her sweet nature and physical comedy.

5-6pm MAGIC MIKE

Stage. Phenomenal magic – the hand is quicker than the eye! You will wonder how he does it!

6-7:15pm TALENT SHOW

Stage. Dancers, violinists, pianist, guitarists, singers, poets, comedians, you-name-it, of all ages put on the show of their lives for their friends and neighbors. Details and biographies available in the Talent Show program at the show.

7:15-8:30pm MISS GREENBELT PAGEANT

Stage. Talent presentations from Miss Greenbelt, Junior, and Little Miss contestants. Host: TBD. Sign Language Interpreter on Stage.

10 am-Noon 51st ANNUAL GREENBELT LABOR DAY PARADE

Crescent Rd. The 51st Annual Labor Day Parade will entertain you with a variety of groups, demonstrate our community spirit, and accentuate our diverse cultural backgrounds. There will be Floats, Bands, Bagpipes, Firetrucks, Color Guards, Smokey Bear, Community Organizations and the Miss Greenbelt participants. The Grand Marshal is Greenbelt's Outstanding Citizen. Sign language interpreter at the Reviewing Stand across from the Municipal Building. Parade Route: Down Crescent Rd from Greenhill to Westway. Communications provided by Central Maryland Amateur Radio Club (CMARC).

Noon-3pm SHOE SUEDE BLUES WITH PETER TORK (tentative)

Stage. This great band, with ex-Monkee Peter Tork, returns to the Festival – Great blues music – straight from Hollywood! A real treat!!!!!!

Noon-3pm FILMWORKS FESTIVAL (tentative)

Greenbelt Theatre. Collection of short productions done by GATE members including movie trailers, satire and animation. Admisison $TBD. Sponsored by Greenbelt Access Television (GATE)
