The Greenbelt Lions Club is a part of Lions District 22-C, which includes Washington D.C., and Calvert, Charles, Montgomery, Prince George's, and St. Mary's Counties in Maryland. The club conducts various fundraisers (White Cane Days twice a year and several Gift Wraps at Beltway Plaza) to provide funding for vision research at the Wilmer Eye Institute, support to the District 22-C Eye and Tissue Bank, and scholarships for youth camps for the disabled at Lions Camp Merrick. We also sponsor a district-wide “Toys for Needy Children” toy drive which kicks off with a parade at Beltway Plaza in late November each year, sponsor a “Bike 'n' Trike” float entry in Greenbelt's annual Labor Day parade, and hold a Community Pancake Breakfast with Santa during Greenbelt's Festival of Lights celebration in December each year. We even co-sponsor a walking club with Doctors Hospital and Beltway Plaza called the Gaitors Club. The group meets to walk inside the Plaza at will and invites regular guest speakers to come and talk to members about various health topics several times a year. Membership in the Gaitors Club is free.
The Greenbelt Lions Club was chartered in the 1950's and has been a continuous force for community service ever since. Membership is open by invitation to all service-minded adults. We also hope to charter a Lions youth group called a Leos Club at Eleanor Roosevelt High School in the future. Our dinner meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, from September to June, at the Greenbelt American Legion (Lakecrest Drive and Greenbelt Road) in Greenbelt, Maryland, starting at 6:44pm.
All funds we collect directly from the community go back into the community or are distributed to regional, national, and/or International Lions programs. Our administrative fees (club dues) cover all our overhead costs. The Greenbelt Lions membership is a diverse group of men and women -- everyone from Greenbelt's movers and shakers to those who can serve in only a limited capacity. It is the diversity of our membership that allows us to accomplish great things and have fun while doing so.
