Meeting called to order by King Lion Lynda Varda at 6:59PM

King Lion Lynda made special announcement reminding club of BONE MARROW BLOOD DRIVE on December 21 for Lion PJ Siegel.

Songs, Pledge of Allegiance, Invocation, Toast, Introductions

Gift Wrap – Announcement requesting all Lions to be in attendance for the gift wrap on Saturday, December 21, 11:00AM-2:00PM, due to special coupons being offered by Beltway Plaza merchants. Expectation was that many would be redeemed at gift-wrap stand. The promotion was for about 100 coupons equal in value to $6.00 to be given away.

Toy Drive – Lion Joe Wilkerson reported that once again the Toy Drive was a success. Several area hospitals have been visited. Lion Ron Wells is to take over the Toy drive – Lion Joe announced that this was his last year of coordinating it.

VDG Mike Bleything offered brief words about the Lions, Lionism, and his goals upon becoming District Governor next year. VDG Mike recited the names of the Greenbelt Lions on the District 22-C Honor Roll, which includes Greenbelt Lions Joe Wilkerson, Joe Marquis (deceased), and Emory Harmon

The Laurel Lions Club has endorsed VDG Mike for District Governor and he has submitted his name to run for District Governor. Lion Mike’s goals include: membership and retention. Lion Mike recited the fact that although D22-C gained 122 new members this year, it lost 200+. He stated there is a need to get our members involved, more advertising and find other ways to tell the Lions’ story.

Over the past 15 years over 330,000 children have participated in the Lions International Peace Poster contest. The theme is always a peace-oriented theme. This year it was “Dream of Peace”. Only 11-13 year olds submit drawings and participate in the contest. Greenbelt has finished 1st in District 22-C for the past several years, which means we advanced to the next level of competition (Multiple District 22). However, this year Greenbelt finished 2nd in District 22-C, so we did not advance. Greenbelt sponsored eight groups this year including a Homeschooler’s Group for the first time. The entry by Elizabeth Hammett, (the Homeschooler) was the one that placed 2nd at the district level. We will need help to hang the posters and hand out certificates and prize money at a future meeting. The theme for the 16th annual contest is “Create a Brighter Tomorrow”.

Lion PJ facilitated a Chinese Christmas Gift Give-away Huah. Great fun was had by all as those present were tested on their knowledge of Lionism in general, facts about the Greenbelt Lions Club and its members specifically, and on the presentations pertaining to Chanukah, Christmas and Kwanzaa.
