News Letter

August 2018

Summer may seem to be coming to an end, but that doesn’t mean GTA’s sponsored activities will end.  Tuesday and Friday Evening Drop-Ins will continue to be held through October.   On Sat., Sept. 1, the always popular Labor Day Social will once again be held at the Greenbriar Condominium courts, 7600 Hanover Parkway hosted by long-time GTA member and Greenbelt City Mayor, Emmett Jordan.  In conjunction with the social, a cookout is to be held with GTA providing hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and snacks.  Attendees are invited to bring a pot-luck dish to share, but it isn’t mandatory. This event is free to GTA members and $5.00 for non-members.   To RSVP or for more information visit greenbelt.com/tennis.  Because of the popularity of this event, cutoff for participating will need to be capped at 35, so if planning on attending please sign up now!  The social will run from 9:00 to 2:00.

Arrangements are being made for a contingent of GTA members to take part in Greenbelt’s Labor Day Parade.  We will carry GTA’s banner and proudly wear our tee-shirts.  We also have a kid-size net and rackets and may put on a little demonstration during halts in the parade.  It should be fun and all our welcome to join us.  If interested please contact Linda Showlund at llshowlund@gmail.com or call or text at (301)367-2548,

Other popular annual events scheduled for this fall are the David Craig Memorial Doubles and Singles Tournaments.   The Doubles Tournament is scheduled for the weekend of Sept. 29th and 30th with the Singles Tournament taking place the following weekend, Oct. 3rd and 4th.  A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the David Craig Memorial Scholarship Fund.   The Craig Scholarship was established in 1986 as a memorial to David Craig, a 1979 Eleanor Roosevelt High School graduate who died tragically in an automobile accident. For over thirty years, a $10,000 scholarship is awarded annually to an ERHS graduate who, like David, is judged to be well-rounded and participates in school, sports and community activities.

Congratulations to the winners of Saturday Evening Round Robin Doubles Tournament, Level A Kevin Spotts and Kenny Thweatt and Level B Valerie Robertson and Sandy Cooke.
